Hong Kong-based company MATTE WORKS has just released a solar watch collection dubbed ‘Solution-01’. This launch marks the first step in the company’s mission to provide a new way of reconnecting with nature, educating communities on the impact of screen fatigue, and ultimately cultivating wellness practices in the digital age.
‘More people now spend their days lying down, sitting, or standing, which some believe contributes to cyber-sickness and causes various psychophysical symptoms that impact our mental and physical well-being. While we emphasize personal well-being, we also consider the well-being of the planet. We believe there is an urge to respond to climate change, just as there is a need to respond to our well-being. We design and produce fine timepieces that preserve the Earth’s resources. Our products promote a greener approach to living in harmony with human life and the planet,’ comments the team.

Specifically, ‘Solution-01’ is driven by converting natural or artificial light received by a solar cell — a solar panel unit under the dial — into electrical energy. The energy stored in the rechargeable secondary battery is used to power the watch. Unlike disposable batteries found in traditional quartz timepieces, the ‘Solution-01’ battery can be recharged a thousand times before replacing it — offering a more eco-friendly alternative to conventional designs.

With a design language that emphasizes simplicity, the company’s minimalist approach gives ‘Solution-01’ a contemporary vision while retaining an essential charm. To start, the 40mm diameter case is 9.7mm thick and constructed of 316L Stainless Steel with a brushed finish, creating a thin, lightweight, unisex aesthetic while remaining unobtrusive and ready-to-wear.
Its high-polish chamfer on the bezel adds an air of elegance. At the same time, the architectural lug provides a sleek and minimalistic look, and the industrial crown complements the style of the watch. Furthermore, a dense and scratch-resistant sapphire-coated crystal enhances durability, along with an anti-reflective treatment for optimal clarity. Finally, the solid stainless steel case back is etched with the specification of the watch.
The solar panel features a patterned translucent dial (black version), inspired by the heliostat mirror of a Concentrated Solar Power (CSP) energy plant, a critical component responsible for tracking the sun and redirecting the beam of sunlight onto the target receiver. The beauty happens from the accurately calculated heliostat pattern, resulting in a futuristic, sci-fi-like landscape. Over the solar panel, all hour positions are marked with minutes and hours markers for legibility. Brushed pencil hands filled with fluorescent tints ensure a clear display of time in a low-light environment.

choose your fit: leather or nylon strap
As a final layer, MATTE WORKS has designed an ultra-adaptable and comfortable strap that is both functional and stylish with its easy-wearing clasp. The leather is of premium quality, with contrasting tack stitchings that highlight the style slightly. ‘For those with a more active lifestyle, the nylon strap is for you. Our nylon strap is made from durable and washable materials to ensure a comfortable and long-lasting fit. Overall, ‘Solution-01’ offers two different color options for each of the following features: the dial versions (Black & White), the leather straps (Black & Chestnut), and the nylon straps (Black & Pine).
